Lewis Quinn, a 27-year-old from Newcastle, was seriously injured in a quad bike accident in Kalamaki, Zante, less than 24 hours after arriving on June 6. His father, John Quinn, has described the ongoing ordeal as a nightmare.
Accident Details and Injuries
John Quinn, his son Lewis, and family friend Shaun Clark had hired quad bikes to tour the local area. The following morning, the rental operator notified them of an accident. Lewis sustained a fractured arm and a jaw fractured in two places. He was rushed to hospital and placed on a ventilator.
Medical Complications
Lewis's condition worsened due to internal bleeding in his lungs, which triggered an infection that progressed to pneumonia. After nearly two weeks in hospital, he is now awake and improving, but doctors have not confirmed when he will be well enough to leave and return to the UK.
No Travel Insurance
John revealed that Lewis had not arranged travel insurance before the trip. A GoFundMe appeal launched by Shaun Clark has raised nearly £7,000 to support treatment costs, including repatriation and accommodation for Lewis's partner, who has flown out from Bedford.
John, a tattoo artist, expressed the immense stress he is under: "I've never experienced stress like this in my life. He's been under sedation and they're trying to bring him out of that to remove the tube, but he's getting agitated."
Financial Strain and Future Plans
John has considered cashing in his pension but was told it would take three weeks. The funds from the GoFundMe are for immediate care. John is desperate to accompany Lewis on the flight home but faces uncertainty about accommodation as high season approaches. He said: "I would like to fly home with Lewis. We're between apartments as we've not had a tenancy for more than two nights, high season is approaching and I'm worried I won't have a bed; it's all very, very stressful."
