Which? has revealed that Aldi is the UK's cheapest supermarket for May 2024, maintaining its lead in the consumer group's monthly price comparison. The discount chain's basket of 69 items averaged £121.56, undercutting all major rivals.
Waitrose was the most expensive, with the same shop costing £158.13—a difference of £36.57. Lidl came a close second at £124.88, just £3.32 more than Aldi. Asda took third place at £137.91, followed by Tesco (£138.84), Sainsbury's (£142.33), Morrisons (£144.36), and Ocado (£147.64).
The comparison included branded and own-brand items such as Birds Eye Garden Peas, Heinz baked beans, Hovis bread, milk, and butter. Special offer prices were considered, but multi-buys and two-tier loyalty prices were excluded.
Ele Clark, Which? Retail Editor, said: 'Our latest monthly analysis has once again seen Aldi retain its title as the UK's cheapest supermarket. With food prices continuing to squeeze household budgets, it comes as no surprise that many people are choosing to shop with the discounters.'
Overall, the average shop across all retailers was higher than in April, when Aldi's basket cost £112.90. Which? noted that its monthly list of items is not fully disclosed.
