A woman whose father purchased a property on the Channel 4 show A Place in the Sun has shared what life is really like once the cameras stop rolling. The programme follows Brits seeking a sunnier lifestyle abroad, guided by property experts such as Jasmine Harman, Laura Hamilton, and Ben Hillman.
A Family's Unexpected Journey
Kelly Williams, Assistant News Editor, revealed that when her dad Neil announced he would be on television, the rest of the family were far from excited. In 2023, Neil and his wife Jane appeared on the show, hoping to embrace a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle, including joining a local tennis club and immersing themselves in Spanish culture.
“A typical Brit abroad, he’s fond of a pint, a pie, and belting out Piano Man at karaoke – that should give you an idea of where he ended up… yes, Alicante,” Kelly wrote. Ironically, during filming, the city experienced its worst wind and rain in nearly a century, with gale-force winds wreaking havoc on umbrellas and hairdos.
The Property Search
The couple wanted a spacious home within walking distance of the beach, suitable for family visits. After viewing several properties, they made an offer on a three-bedroom townhouse. “We told them, ‘Don’t be one of those irritating, time-wasting couples. You need to buy one so we can all enjoy inexpensive holidays,’” Kelly recalled.
Three years on, the property in Gran Alicant has become a beloved family retreat. Just ten minutes from the airport, it now sleeps eight after renovations, featuring a patio, roof terrace, and shared pool. The neighbourhood is popular with British expats, offering comforts like full English breakfasts and roast dinners at local pubs such as The Belfry.
Local Celebrity Status
Kelly’s father has become a local celebrity, often commandeering the microphone at karaoke nights. He has also started learning Spanish, though his daughter notes it sounds peculiar with his Scouse accent. “Come evening, both the square and the nearby Commercial Centre burst with life, frequented by people like my dad, who suddenly fancies himself a vocalist,” she added.
The couple’s budget was £110,000, and with the help of presenter Leah Charles-King, they secured the fully furnished townhouse for £106,723. Jane was amazed: “I’m blown away that we could get a whole house for our budget; I had only expected to get a flat.”
In a twist of fate, the previous owner had named the home “Casa Jaime.” Thanks to an inheritance from Jane’s mother Pearl, who called her “Jai,” the property was renamed “Casa Jai” in her honour. The family now enjoys regular visits, though Brexit rules limit stays to 90 days within 180 days without a visa.
“So if you’re ever in Alicante and happen to spot them, whatever you do, don’t ask my dad for any karaoke requests,” Kelly joked.
