Steam Machine enthusiasts are facing an agonizing wait until 2027 to purchase additional controllers, as Valve's reservation system struggles to keep up with demand. Orders for the Steam Machine are expected to go live next week, but those hoping to secure a second controller for cooperative play will have to exercise patience.
Reservation Queue Delays
In a recent blog post, Valve detailed the waiting times for the Steam Controller based on reservation queue positions. Early registrants from May may receive their controller by September 2026, but new entrants are now seeing a 2027 delivery estimate. This extended timeline has frustrated many gamers eager to dive into couch co-op experiences.
Valve introduced the reservation system after the Steam Controller sold out quickly at launch. Gamers can register their place in a queue, and stock updates are emailed in order of registration. The system now displays estimated reservation email dates, but for latecomers, the wait is daunting.
How the Queue Works
Once reservation emails are sent, recipients have 72 hours to place their order. If they miss the window, their slot passes to the next person in line. Valve notes that the queue may speed up if some gamers decline or miss their opportunity. The company stated, "Though the current estimation for orders placed today forward indicate a 2027 date for shipping, we will update that estimate as we get closer."
Steam Machine and Controller Bundles
Valve is expected to announce the Steam Machine release date next week, offering a bundle that includes the console and a controller. However, those wanting a second pad for multiplayer games will face the long wait. The Steam Machine features a built-in connection puck for easy pairing, making local co-op games seamless. Fortunately, any standard Bluetooth controller, such as Xbox or PlayStation DualSense pads, can be used as alternatives.
For those fully committed to the Valve ecosystem, the wait may be frustrating. The advice is to reserve a place in the queue as soon as possible to avoid even longer delays.
Steam Controller Features
The Steam Controller launched in May 2026 at a price of £85 in the UK. It includes traditional joysticks, face buttons, bumpers, and triggers, along with touch pads featuring haptic feedback, similar to those on the Steam Deck. Four rear buttons, touch-sensitive handle grips and joysticks, and a gyroscope for gyro aiming complete the package. The controller connects via a USB puck that doubles as a charging dock, or via Bluetooth, though some proprietary features are lost with wireless use.
Valve's vast library of controller map layouts enhances compatibility with PC games, making the Steam Controller a versatile option despite the wait.
