Qatar Airways Ditches Boarding Passes for Facial Recognition

Qatar Airways has introduced facial recognition technology at Hamad International Airport in Doha, enabling passengers to board flights without a physical or mobile boarding pass. The system, named Fast Pass, uses biometric verification to allow travellers to pass through security gates, self-service bag drops, and boarding gates by scanning their face.

How the Fast Pass System Works

Passengers can activate Fast Pass either through the Qatar Airways app after checking in or at self-service kiosks at the airport. The technology captures a passenger’s face and links it to their passport and boarding pass, creating a secure digital identity. Once registered, the passenger does not need to re-register for future flights. Participation is optional, and travellers can still use traditional boarding passes if they prefer. Participants must be aged 18 or over.

Not the First Airline to Use Biometrics

Qatar Airways is not the first carrier to adopt facial recognition. Emirates launched a similar biometric check-in system at Dubai International Airport in November 2025. According to travel experts, such systems are likely to become more common, streamlining airport procedures and improving convenience for passengers.

Flights to Five UK Airports

Qatar Airways currently operates flights to and from Edinburgh, Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, and Manchester. The airline plans to explore partnerships with other carriers to expand the technology to more passengers in the future.

Passenger Satisfaction with Biometrics

The 2025 IATA Global Passenger Survey found that 50% of passengers have used biometrics at some point during their airport journey, with 85% of those users reporting high levels of satisfaction. Additionally, 74% of respondents said they would be willing to share their biometric information if it meant they could skip presenting a passport or boarding pass at checkpoints such as check-in, security, border control, and boarding.
