Utz Quality Foods has initiated a voluntary recall of certain Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips sold across the United States due to concerns that they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall was announced after the company discovered that a seasoning ingredient, specifically a dry milk powder sourced from a third-party supplier, could be contaminated, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday.
Affected Products and Distribution
The recall encompasses a variety of flavors and package sizes distributed nationwide. Affected products include Zapp's Bayou Blackened Ranch, Big Cheezy, and Salt and Vinegar chips, as well as Dirty brand Maui Onion, Salt and Vinegar, and Sour Cream and Onion chips. The FDA stated that no other products manufactured by Utz Quality Foods are included in this recall.
No Reported Illnesses
As of the recall announcement, no illnesses related to the consumption of these chips have been reported. Company officials noted that the seasoning had tested negative for Salmonella prior to use. However, the recall was issued "out of an abundance of caution" following the ingredient supplier's own recall, the FDA explained.
Health Risks and Consumer Advice
Salmonella infections can be serious and sometimes fatal, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as young children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions. In otherwise healthy people, symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Consumers are strongly advised not to eat the recalled chips. Instead, they should discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Retailers have also been instructed to remove the affected products from store shelves.
