Netflix has cancelled the Duffer Brothers' new sci-fi series, The Boroughs, less than a month after its debut on May 21. The show, described as a spiritual successor to Stranger Things with an older cast, received positive reviews from fans but failed to maintain viewership after its opening weekend.
Strong Start, Sharp Decline
The Boroughs pulled in an impressive 5.6 million views during its opening weekend, according to Deadline. However, viewing figures dropped off sharply after the first week, with little indication of long-term growth. The high production costs, including special effects and an all-star cast, made it difficult for Netflix to justify renewal.
Fan Reactions
Despite the cancellation, fans praised the series on IMDb. One viewer called it "outstanding" and expressed eagerness for a second season. Another said they binge-watched the entire season in a day, calling it "the ultimate sign of a great show." A third fan hailed it as "a masterpiece" and "television gold," praising the cast, atmosphere, and writing.
Duffer Brothers' Other Projects
The Boroughs was the second Duffer Brothers-produced paranormal series to debut this year, following Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which was regarded as a limited series. This leaves Netflix with just one new Duffer Brothers project: the animated Stranger Things: Tales from '85.
Plot and Setting
The Boroughs is set in an idyllic retirement community in New Mexico, where an unlikely band of heroes must join forces to combat a sinister otherworldly threat. The series starred Alfred Molina, among others.
Reach has contacted Netflix for comment.
