Liverpool went stale last season under Arne Slot and the club are determined to refresh the side in the off-season. Andoni Iraola has come in to take Slot's job as manager and now the squad is being overhauled bit by bit.
Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate have left, and while Virgil van Dijk and Alisson remain, there is a real effort underway to freshen things up. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League under Slot's management last season, losing 19 games across all competitions in 2025/26.
Whereas they had previously been dynamic and intense, they grew ponderous and predictable. And while there were clearly issues right across the pitch, the lack of productivity from the flanks became a real headache.
Salah's departure leaves a gigantic hole to fill on the right wing, but the injury to Hugo Ekitike, the doubt over Federico Chiesa's future and a reluctance to rely too heavily on the 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, means recruitment on the wings is a priority.
Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes hasn't wasted any time, springing into action to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna for €40million (£34.6m). The 22-year-old has been signed on a six-year contract ahead of Newcastle, Bayer Leverkusen, Manchester United and Real Madrid and is an exciting addition.
He contributed seven goals and five assists in 36 appearances for Osasuna last season after joining from Real Madrid and has the exact kind of profile Liverpool crave: he's fast, direct and versatile.
While Munoz is right-footed and has generally played on the left wing, he is comfortable operating on the opposite flank or centrally. He is particularly dangerous bursting into space on the counter-attack and, after the Anfield crowd fell in love with Ngumoha's dribbling ability, Munoz should be taken to by the home supporters.
The signing of Munoz, who could become a replacement for Luis Diaz, does not impact upon the pursuit of Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old winger remains the top transfer target for Liverpool this summer, but a deal will be much harder to strike.
RB Leipzig are determined to hold onto the Ivory Coast star, who is currently playing at the World Cup. Liverpool are reportedly ready to stump up €100m (£86.5m) for Diomande, although Leipzig want even more for the player they only signed from Leganes for just £17.3m last summer.
Should Liverpool convince Leipzig to sell - and beat off competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain - then Diomande will take up the difficult role of replacing Salah on the right wing. Unlike Salah, Diomande is right-footed and has been fielded on either flank by Leipzig.
His ability to make the difference at the top end of the pitch is the main attraction for Liverpool after Diomande contributed 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances in his debut campaign for Leipzig.
The space on the right wing is completely vacant with Salah having departed after nine years at the club and Florian Wirtz more comfortable in central positions. The left side already has Cody Gakpo, Ngumoha and Ekitike, while the futures of Chiesa and Harvey Elliott still need to be resolved too.
Iraola will be tasked with bringing the best out of his current players, with improving Alexander Isak arguably one of the top priorities after an injury-hit debut campaign following his move from Newcastle. The Sweden international started the World Cup campaign brightly, and if he gets through pre-season without injury, he could flourish with two bright young wingers on either flank and Wirtz behind him.
Here is how Liverpool could line up next season with their new arrivals on each wing and £60m January signing Jeremy Jacquet slotting in to replace Konate at centre-back.
Possible Liverpool XI for 2026/27: Alisson; Frimpong, Van Dijk, Jacquet, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Wirtz; Diomande, Munoz, Isak.
