Costco Recalls Ravioli Over Mislabeling: Shrimp Instead of Beef
Costco Recalls Ravioli Over Shrimp Mislabeling

Costco has issued a recall for a popular pasta product sold in two U.S. states due to a significant labeling error that could pose a health risk to customers with shellfish allergies. The recall, announced on Monday, involves a Giovanni Rana product labeled as "Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli," but certain batches actually contain a shrimp filling in lobster sauce.

Details of the Recall

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert after Giovanni Rana received complaints from two consumers who discovered the product contained shrimp ravioli instead of the advertised beef and burrata. The mislabeling is particularly dangerous for individuals with crustacean shellfish allergies, as the ingredient is not listed in the allergen statement.

The affected ravioli was sold in 32-ounce plastic bag packages at Costco stores in New Jersey and Maryland. The products have Use By dates ranging from May 14, 2026, to June 25, 2026, and bear the establishment number 44870. They were produced between March 10, 2026, and April 21, 2026.

Health Risks and Consumer Advice

Lobster and shrimp are both classified as crustacean shellfish, one of the nine major food allergens in the U.S., alongside eggs, milk, soy, wheat, fish, tree nuts, peanuts, and sesame. Allergic reactions can vary from mild symptoms like hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening respiratory issues. Although no illnesses have been reported to date, Costco urges customers with shellfish allergies to avoid consuming the product and return it to any Costco store for a full refund.

Recent Costco Recalls

This recall follows a series of food safety concerns at Costco. In March, the warehouse recalled its Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze due to potential Salmonella contamination. The affected meatloaf had sell-by dates between March 5 and March 16, 2026, and was sold in 26 states. In February, Costco recalled Mini Beignets filled with Caramel after discovering they contained Chocolate Hazelnut, posing a risk for those with tree nut allergies. Those beignets were sold in 22 states between January 16 and January 30, 2026.

Costco continues to prioritize customer safety and encourages anyone with concerns to contact their local store for assistance.
