Brits Urged to Check Video Doorbells Amid Heatwave Warning

Brits are being urged to check their video doorbells on Sunday as temperatures are expected to reach 35°C in parts of the country, posing a risk of overheating for outdoor tech devices. According to Micheal Fernandes, a tech expert at Tapo, prolonged direct sunlight and high temperatures can affect doorbell cameras, leading to temporary performance issues or even shutdowns.

Record-Breaking Heatwave

The Met Office has reported that this year has already seen a number of remarkable temperature milestones. Dr Amy Doherty, Met Office Science Manager, stated: "This year has already seen a number of remarkable temperature milestones. Not only have we now recorded a record eight days with temperatures exceeding 34°C, surpassing the previous record held by 1976 and 2020, but it is also the first year in the UK weather record to see temperatures reach 35°C or higher in May, June and July." She added: "These records highlight just how notable this year has been for UK temperatures, with exceptional warmth observed across multiple months."

Impact on Doorbell Cameras

Micheal Fernandes explained that while most modern doorbell cameras are designed to handle outdoor conditions, including summer heat, they may experience issues during particularly warm spells. He said: "Most modern doorbell cameras are designed to handle outdoor conditions, including summer heat. However, during particularly warm spells, devices positioned in direct sunlight for long periods may experience temporary performance issues such as slower response times, reduced battery efficiency, or overheating warnings." He added: "In some cases, the device may temporarily pause or shut down as a protective measure to prevent internal components from overheating. The good news is that once the camera cools down, normal operation usually resumes quickly."

Tips to Keep Devices Cool

Fernandes has provided several recommendations for keeping doorbell cameras safe during the heatwave. He advises avoiding direct exposure to the elements by positioning devices in shaded areas or under porches. He also suggests checking wall surfaces, as brick and metal can retain heat, and recommends mounting devices on cooler, sheltered areas. Additionally, keeping firmware updated can improve device performance and temperature management. Fernandes concluded: "The good news is that with a few quick checks, most smart home devices will continue running all summer long smoothly."
