Nationwide Building Society has reported a 9% increase in the total value of customer spending on gambling in January compared to the same month last year. The number of gambling-related transactions also rose by 7% over the period.

The building society noted that while most people manage their gambling well, it is encouraging customers to recognise signs of problem gambling, especially with several major sporting events scheduled this year. Data shows that the top 10% of gambling spenders average £745 per month.

A survey of 2,000 gamblers commissioned by Nationwide found that around two-thirds (68%) expect to bet more in 2026 due to the busy sporting calendar. Although many account providers offer gambling blocks, 19% of gamblers are unaware of this option.

Kathryn Townsend, head of customer vulnerability at Nationwide, said: “With a year of major sporting events ahead, we’re concerned that more people could find themselves gambling more than they can afford. That’s why early identification and strong safeguards matter.” She highlighted Nationwide’s 72-hour cooling-off period for gambling blocks as an additional layer of protection.

Raminta Diliso from GamCare charity added: “Gambling harm is often a very hidden issue but the problems it can cause people can be significant. Financial difficulties, mental health struggles and relationship challenges are all common impacts.”

A Betting and Gaming Council spokesperson stated that around 22.5 million adults in Britain bet each month, with the majority doing so safely. They emphasised the threat from the illegal black market and the role of financial institutions in blocking payments to unregulated operators.
