Amazon Begins UK Drone Test Flights in Darlington for 2026 Launch
Amazon drone delivery tests begin in UK town

Amazon has taken a significant leap towards revolutionising parcel deliveries in the UK, with its Prime Air drones now conducting test flights from a new British base.

Test Flights Take Off in County Durham

The US tech giant confirmed it has commenced a limited number of drone flights from its fulfilment centre at Symmetry Park in Darlington, County Durham. This follows the company's announcement in January 2025 that the town would become its UK testing hub.

While the service is not yet available to customers, these flights represent a crucial phase of development. Amazon stated the official drone delivery service is expected to launch in 2026. Eligible residents in Darlington will eventually be able to receive packages weighing less than five pounds (2.3kg) within a remarkable two-hour window.

Sophisticated Technology for Safety and Precision

At the heart of the initiative is Amazon's most advanced drone, the MK30 model. The company emphasises that the device is equipped with sophisticated perception technology and machine learning models designed to ensure safety and avoid obstacles.

This technology allows the drones to identify and navigate around objects that may not appear on standard maps, such as clothes lines, trampolines, and garden furniture. Furthermore, onboard cameras continuously monitor the airspace to detect other aircraft, enabling the drone to take evasive action if necessary.

"These same cameras continuously monitor the surrounding airspace during flight, determining whether evasive action is needed," Amazon explained. The system is trained to recognise people, animals, physical barriers, and other airborne vehicles.

The 'Next Step' for UK Logistics

David Carbon, Vice President of Prime Air, stated that the drones are engineered to operate "quietly and efficiently" with safety as the top priority. An Amazon spokesperson described the test flights as "an exciting next step in bringing drone delivery to the UK."

The company is working in close collaboration with Darlington Borough Council and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) throughout the testing period to ensure all operations meet stringent regulatory and safety standards. This move positions Amazon at the forefront of a potential transformation in last-mile delivery logistics across the country.
