Auto Express has published its updated list of the best large SUVs on sale in the UK, with the Czech-built Skoda Kodiaq taking the top spot. The publication praised the Kodiaq for offering excellent value for money, a generous boot space, and clever cabin options, though it noted drawbacks such as flimsy-feeling rotary dials and a fidgety ride on larger wheel options.
Third Place: Hyundai Santa Fe
The Korean-built Hyundai Santa Fe secured third place. It was commended for being comfortable to drive, its impressive design, and generous equipment levels. However, it lost points due to its high price, a noisy petrol engine, and the lack of a diesel variant. Express reviewer Christopher Sharp, who tested the car earlier this year, noted minor issues such as the third-row amenities feeling misplaced, haptic touch pads that should be buttons, and the engine sounding strained under hard acceleration. He concluded that despite these small problems, the Santa Fe is a capable family SUV worth considering.
Second Place: Volkswagen Tayron
Volkswagen's Tayron claimed second place, earning praise for its seven-seat configuration, comfortable ride, and generous standard equipment. It was marked down for being dull to drive, its plug-in hybrid version accommodating only five passengers, and the R-Line trim levels being expensive.
First Place: Skoda Kodiaq
Topping the list, the Skoda Kodiaq was hailed as the best large SUV to buy. Auto Express stated: "The Skoda Kodiaq embodies all that the Czech firm stands for: solid value for money, quality, practicality, and a few little surprises that add to the ownership experience." Senior road test editor Dean Gibson added: "Skoda's 'Simply Clever' philosophy is perfectly suited to a car such as the Kodiaq – family-friendly features make it a useful accessory to family life." The Kodiaq's main strengths include its practicality and value, though its styling and some interior elements were criticised.
SUVs have become increasingly popular in the UK, with three of the top four best-selling cars of 2026 so far—the Ford Puma, Jaecoo 7, and Nissan Qashqai—all being SUVs. Auto Express's list reflects the growing demand for spacious, family-friendly vehicles that balance comfort, equipment, and affordability.
