A taste test of pumpkin spice lattes from four major UK coffee chains has revealed a surprising favourite, with the original Starbucks version failing to take the top spot. The annual return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) has become a highly anticipated event, but competition is growing as chains like Greggs, Coffee #1, and Pret a Manger launch their own versions.
Starbucks, which first introduced the PSL in 2003, has sold an estimated 424 million servings worldwide. However, its tall PSL, priced at £4, was described as 'pretty pricey' and left a lingering bitterness. While it tasted most like pumpkin, it was only slightly sweet and not the tester's favourite.
Cardiff-based chain Coffee #1 impressed with its version, priced at £3.50 for a regular. The drink had a pleasant sweetness, avoided an unpleasant aftertaste, and offered a choice of 'smooth' or 'strong' coffee. It was deemed better value and nicer than Starbucks, making it the surprise winner.
Other chains tested included Greggs and Pret a Manger, though their results were less notable. The test concluded that while Starbucks remains the original, cheaper alternatives like Coffee #1 offer a superior taste and value for money.
