TK Maxx has overtaken Topshop to become the UK's sixth-largest fashion group, according to recent market data. The discount retailer, known for selling excess stock from other brands at reduced prices, has seen its sales rise by more than 30% since 2016, with further growth expected.
The US-owned chain operates 427 stores across the UK, including 349 TK Maxx outlets and nearly 40 HomeSense homeware stores. Its success is attributed to its agile buying strategy, which allows it to respond quickly to market trends and secure deals on overstocked items from 21,000 different sources worldwide.
Despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, TK Maxx has remained resilient. While many high-street rivals like Debenhams and House of Fraser closed outlets, TK Maxx continued to expand, opening new stores in Uxbridge and York. The company's international arm, which includes the UK, reported a 1% decline in sales for the month following July's reopening, but the UK business performed better, though exact figures were not disclosed.
Deborah Dolce, director of TJX's European division, expressed confidence in the company's future, noting that the mix of products in the second half of the year would be exciting. She highlighted the company's ability to shift into popular categories like beauty, homewares, and children's clothing to meet demand.
Retail analysts point to TK Maxx's focus on branded goods and its ability to negotiate deals during a period of heavy discounting as key factors in its success. However, the company faces challenges in replicating its in-store 'treasure hunt' experience online, which may impact its performance during the ongoing pandemic.
