Tesco Launches 24/7 Royal Mail Locker Trial Across Nine UK Stores
Tesco Trials 24/7 Royal Mail Lockers in Nine UK Stores

Tesco is launching a pioneering six-month trial that introduces 24/7 Royal Mail lockers across nine selected stores in the United Kingdom. This innovative service is designed to streamline the shopping experience for busy customers by integrating parcel collection and drop-off facilities directly into supermarket visits.

Enhanced Convenience for Shoppers

The trial enables customers to access Royal Mail lockers around the clock, featuring label printing and QR code services. This initiative specifically targets individuals who may not have the ability to print labels at home, offering a seamless solution for managing parcels alongside their weekly grocery shopping.

How the Service Operates

To utilise the lockers, shoppers must first pay for postage online and receive a QR code. Alternatively, they can obtain a QR code from the company to which they are returning a parcel. This process eliminates the need for home printing and simplifies parcel handling, making it more efficient than ever before.

Strategic Partnership and Expansion

Jack Clarkson, Managing Director for Out-of-Home & Commercial Excellence at Royal Mail, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. "We are really excited to bring Royal Mail lockers to Tesco stores," he stated. "This partnership is another example of how we are making it easier than ever for our customers to collect, send and return parcels with us." This move is part of Royal Mail's broader strategy to triple its parcel points to 45,000 by the year 2030.

A Tesco spokesperson highlighted the benefits of the partnership, noting, "We're pleased to introduce Royal Mail lockers across a selected small number of stores. Working with Royal Mail, in addition to our existing locker partner InPost, will give even more customers a convenient way to collect and drop off their parcels as part of their shopping trip."

Context and Broader Initiatives

Currently, Royal Mail operates 2,600 lockers across the UK, excluding the nine new units at Tesco. This trial represents a significant step in enhancing customer convenience by combining grocery shopping with parcel services. It follows other customer-focused initiatives from Tesco, such as the Clubcard Plus subscription service.

Launched in November 2019, Clubcard Plus costs £7.99 per month and offers benefits including 10% discounts on two major shopping trips monthly, along with reductions on F&F clothing and home products. One satisfied customer, a mother-of-one, praised the program, stating, "I genuinely don't think that there is a better supermarket reward system on the market than Tesco Clubcard." She emphasised that the savings consistently exceed the subscription fee, making it a valuable investment for regular shoppers.

This trial underscores Tesco's commitment to innovation in retail, aiming to provide comprehensive services that cater to the evolving needs of modern consumers. By integrating parcel solutions into the shopping experience, Tesco is setting a new standard for convenience in the supermarket industry.
