Tesco Implements Strict New Rules for Parent and Child Parking Bays

Tesco supermarket has taken a firm stance on enforcing its parent and child parking regulations, introducing new signage and potential fines to deter misuse. This move has been widely applauded by parents who often struggle to find available bays when shopping with young children.

Enhanced Enforcement Measures

Supermarket staff have installed prominent signs in car parks that clearly state: “Parent and child only. Misuse of these bays may result in a PARKING CHARGE. This space is reserved for customers taking little shoppers into the store.” These designated bays are specifically designed with extra space to accommodate car seats and prams, and are typically located near store entrances for convenience.

However, despite these thoughtful provisions, many drivers without children have been illegally using these spaces during busy periods. Tesco's new enforcement strategy aims to address this persistent problem that has frustrated countless parents across the country.

Parental Response and Social Media Reaction

The supermarket's decision has generated significant positive feedback on platforms like TikTok, where parents have expressed relief and support for the stricter measures. One parent commented: “Need these everywhere. The amount of times I see people using them with no child!”

Another user highlighted the practical challenges: “I’m pregnant and have an 11 month old baby and there are literally never any parent child spaces available. Trying to fit my pregnant [body] out the car in a normal space as well as trying to get my baby out is a nightmare.”

A third parent shared their personal experience: “Having a toddler and being 4 months pregnant I really struggle to get in and out of the car.” Many have called for other retailers to follow Tesco's example in enforcing similar parking regulations.

Parking Charge Details and Regulations

According to Tesco's official policies, misuse of family parking bays can result in a £100 fine. To qualify for using these spaces, customers must be accompanied by a child under 12 years old. The supermarket operates various parking arrangements through different partners, including APCOA and Horizon Parking.

Key parking regulations include:

  • Maximum stay limits that vary by location
  • Clear signage displaying terms and conditions at entrances
  • Reduced fine options for prompt payment

For car parks managed by APCOA and Horizon Parking, overstaying the maximum time limit results in a £70 Parking Charge Notice, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days. Where signage indicates a £100 charge, this is reduced to £60 with timely payment.

Tesco's website advises: “Free parking is available in most stores but time is limited to a maximum stay, depending on where the store is. Where there is a maximum parking time, our car parks have signs which clearly display the terms and conditions of using the car park, including the maximum stay time.”

The supermarket encourages customers with questions about parking to consult the specific details on any Parking Charge Notice received or speak with store colleagues during their next visit.
