Supermarkets including Tesco, Aldi and Argos are set to launch significant price cuts this summer, with discounts on a wide range of products from electronics to clothing. The moves come as retailers prepare for a busy shopping period, with deals expected to start from midnight on Friday.
Tesco has confirmed offers on items such as the Nintendo Switch, FIFA 2021 and smart televisions, along with half-price deals on coffee machines and children's toys. Aldi will launch its sale online on Friday, promising savings on Apple AirPods and the Nintendo Switch while stocks last. Argos is also expected to participate with discounts on home and tech products.
However, a report by Which? has warned that many Black Friday deals may not be as good as they seem. The consumer group found that nine in ten discounts last year were actually cheaper to buy earlier in the year. It tracked 219 popular products over six months and found only three were at their cheapest on Black Friday.
Consumer expert Martin Lewis advised shoppers to only buy items on their shopping list and to research prices beforehand. “If you’re looking to buy a video game that costs £50, and it’s reduced to £25 on Black Friday, then yes, it’s a good deal,” he said. “But if you’re tempted to buy it just because it’s on offer, then you’ve fallen into a trap.”
Asda has also shared early discounts on Lego, Now TV and Disney toys, while Morrisons is offering a third off all champagne. Sainsbury’s has remained tight-lipped about its discounts but confirmed its fashion brand TU will participate in stores and online from Friday.
