Woolworths has expressed disappointment after its latest designer collaboration, the Mini Universal Bag by Anya Hindmarch, sparked a resale frenzy online. The $15 tote, launched in stores this week, has appeared on eBay for up to $500, with some listings reaching $250 or $99.
The miniature version follows the success of the original Universal Bag, which launched in early 2025 for $20 and became a sought-after accessory. Woolworths reported that the mini bag has sold thousands more units in its first week than the larger version did last year.
A Woolworths spokesperson said: 'Ultimately it's disappointing to see and takes away from the fun of the launch of such an iconic product. We don't encourage the resale of these items. It's clearly unacceptable and doesn't meet our expectations.'
The bag is part of a global sustainability project by Anya Hindmarch, made from 100% recycled and recyclable materials. Since 2021, the Universal Bag initiative has diverted an estimated 433 tonnes of plastic from landfill.
While some shoppers criticised the $20 price tag of the original during a cost-of-living crisis, others embraced the chance to own a designer piece. The mini version taps into the trend for compact accessories, blending practicality with status appeal.
