A money-saving tip shared by a savvy shopper could see Sainsbury's customers bagging luxury chocolate for a fraction of the price, with some items discounted by as much as 90%.
The Secret Scanner Reveal
In a video posted online, a content creator known as @costoflivingcrisistips demonstrated a clever trick using the supermarket's 'Shop & Scan' handheld devices. These gadgets allow customers to scan items as they shop, avoiding queues at the till. The real surprise came when he scanned items with existing yellow reduction stickers.
He first targeted a 295g Aero Peppermint bar, which was labelled as reduced from £5 to £2.50. However, when scanned, the device showed a price of just 50p. Delighted with the find, which he noted would be perfect for Easter hampers, he decided to take the entire box, securing 12 large bars for a fraction of their original cost.
More Sweet Savings Uncovered
The bargains didn't stop there. The shopper then scanned a pack of eight KitKat Gingerbread fingers, marked at £2.20. The scanner revealed a staggering further reduction to 22p per pack. He promptly added a box of these festive treats to his basket as well.
In total, his haul of 12 Aero bars and 20 packs of KitKats came to a mere £10.40. Had he paid the last marked prices, the cost would have been around £60, representing a massive saving.
The content creator admitted he doesn't "really eat chocolate" and plans to give most of it away. He also checked the expiry dates, confirming the Aero bars were good until July 2026 and the KitKats until April 2026, making them perfect for future gifting or gradual consumption.
How the Supermarket Hack Works
The video sparked questions in the comments, with some wondering if the discount only applies when using the scanner. A person claiming to be a Sainsbury's worker clarified the situation.
They explained that after Christmas, seasonal stock often undergoes multiple price reductions in quick succession. Sometimes, the newest reduction ticket hasn't been printed or put on the shelf yet. The lower price is active in the system and will be charged at any till, whether you use a handheld scanner or not.
This led to a mixed reaction from viewers. One person fumed that it "just shows how much the supermarkets are ripping us off," while another pragmatically noted that selling stock for 50p is better than throwing it away entirely.
The original poster encouraged others to check their local Sainsbury's in the coming days to see if similar bargains are still in stock. As stock and promotions vary by store and time, it's a case of scanning to discover the hidden deal.
