Brits Urged to Check Their Coins: Two Rare 50p Pieces Worth Up to £250 Hiding in Your Change
Rare 50p coins worth £250 hiding in your change

Coin enthusiasts and bargain hunters across the UK are being advised to rummage through their spare change after experts identified two ultra-rare 50p pieces that could be worth up to £250 each.

The Hidden Treasures in Your Pocket

Specialists at the Royal Mint have highlighted two particular commemorative 50p coins that are fetching astonishing prices from collectors:

  • The Kew Gardens 50p (2009): With only 210,000 minted, this floral design commemorating London's famous botanical gardens is the holy grail for collectors.
  • The Olympic Wrestling 50p (2011): Part of the 2012 Olympics series, this grappling-themed coin had a limited mintage of just 1,125,500.

Why Are These Coins So Valuable?

"Scarcity drives value in coin collecting," explains numismatic expert David Clarke. "The Kew Gardens 50p had the second-lowest mintage of any circulating 50p coin, while the wrestling design is the rarest of all 29 Olympic 50p coins."

Current valuations show:

  1. Kew Gardens 50p: £150-£250 in excellent condition
  2. Olympic Wrestling 50p: £10-£20 (with some special editions reaching £80)

How to Spot These Rare Finds

The distinctive designs make identification straightforward:

  • Kew Gardens: Features the famous Chinese Pagoda surrounded by vines and the date "1759"
  • Olympic Wrestling: Shows two wrestlers in action with the London 2012 logo

Clarke advises: "Check your change daily, ask friends and family to look through theirs, and consider visiting local banks for fresh coin rolls. These treasures are still out there in circulation."
