High street discount giant Poundland has confirmed a fresh wave of store closures, with nine branches set to shut for good in the coming weeks. The retailer announced that three of these locations will close their doors imminently, as part of its ongoing strategy to reshape its estate.
Imminent Closures and Clearance Sales
The first three stores facing closure are located in Plymstock, Gosport, and Urmston. The Plymstock branch will shut on January 20, followed by Gosport on January 29 and Urmston on February 16. All affected shops are currently holding major clearance events, with discounts of up to 40% on all remaining stock, from groceries and homewares to clothing and health and beauty products.
A spokesperson for the chain stated: "Customers will be able to take advantage of significant savings as these stores prepare for closure in the days ahead." The sales will continue until all items are sold.

Return to £1 Pricing and Future Strategy
As it consolidates its store portfolio, Poundland is making a significant shift in its pricing strategy. Following a successful five-month trial in 17 West Midlands shops, the retailer has committed to pricing around 60% of its grocery items at £1 across its remaining estate. The company says this move marks a return to its roots and will end "additional price complexity".
Darren MacDonald, Poundland's UK country manager, commented: "We know how disappointing it is when we leave a store, but before we close our doors for a final time, we're determined to say goodbye by offering even more amazing value to customers." He added that the company looks forward to welcoming shoppers to its hundreds of other UK locations.
The overall number of Poundland outlets is expected to fall to between 650 and 700, down from approximately 800 last year. This reduction is occurring as leases expire or landlords serve notice. The closures follow a substantial round of shutdowns at the end of 2025, which saw over 25 stores, including those in Twickenham, Leicester, Blackpool, and Carlisle, cease trading.
