Asda has suffered a major IT glitch that left nearly 10,000 workers with incorrect payslips on the first day of its new payment system. The supermarket chain identified around 9,500 hourly paid colleagues who were underpaid due to an error with holiday pay calculations.
The glitch occurred as part of 'Project Future', a new HR and payroll system introduced after the Issa brothers bought Asda from Walmart for £6.8bn in 2021. In a letter to senior staff, Asda acknowledged the issue and said it would pay workers what they received in February to cover any shortfall, with payments due by Friday payday.
An Asda spokesman said: 'We recently launched a new HR system and conducted pre-emptive checks to identify any potential issues before colleagues were paid this month. These checks found a potential problem with holiday pay that could have resulted in a pay discrepancy. We have taken immediate and proactive steps to correct this.'
The payroll issue comes amid staff walkouts at two stores and concerns over Asda's £4.2bn debt. It also follows a series of IT glitches at other major UK retailers, including Greggs, Sainsbury's, Tesco and McDonald's, which caused store closures and delivery problems last week.
Nationwide Building Society also experienced an IT glitch on Friday, delaying payments to and from other banks due to prolonged overnight maintenance. The bank confirmed the issue has been resolved and urged customers not to resend duplicate payments.
