Hollyoaks star Jessica Fox has spoken out about her character Nancy Osborne's multiple sclerosis diagnosis, which aired in a recent episode. The condition, which affects around 100,000 people in the UK, is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves.
Fox, who plays Nancy, told The Sun that she thoroughly researched MS after learning about the storyline. She admitted she initially knew little about the disease but found it fascinating to portray due to its hidden symptoms.
“Even if someone looks really well on the outside, on the inside they might be suffering,” Fox said, emphasising her hope to raise awareness about MS. She noted that many people live full lives with the condition, including having children and careers.
The actress also discussed how Nancy will be affected going forward, including relapses that may cause leg spasms, vision changes, or slurred speech. Fox said she was conscious of making the portrayal realistic while delivering dramatic television.
Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
