KFC's Sydney Airport Breakfast Trial Sparks Buzz Over $4.95 Avocado Toast
KFC Trials Breakfast Menu at Sydney Airport

Fast-food giant KFC has quietly launched a trial of a brand-new breakfast menu at its Sydney Airport outlet, sending Australian food lovers into a frenzy. The pilot scheme, which includes several never-before-seen items, was uncovered by popular food content creator Russell Stuart, known online as Russ Eats.

The Viral Breakfast Reveal

Russell Stuart broke the news on social media after spotting the experimental offerings. In a video that quickly went viral, he expressed his long-held wish for KFC to serve morning meals, declaring it the "first breaking news of 2026." The menu features a range of hearty options designed to compete in the lucrative breakfast market.

The selection includes a Zinger bacon and egg roll, a Brekkie Tower, hash browns, and a BLAT – a sandwich containing bacon, lettuce, avocado, and tomato. Stuart highlighted the Brekkie Tower Combo, which packs a Zinger fillet, hash brown, bacon, and egg, as his personal top pick. He also noted the addition of coffee to the menu, though he humorously suggested the chain should consider adding Dare Iced Coffee or Gatorade for the full experience.

The $4.95 Avo Toast Dividing Opinions

While the chicken-centric items generated excitement, it was one classic Australian dish that truly captured public attention. KFC is offering avocado toast for just $4.95, comprising two slices of bread topped with smashed avocado. Stuart joked that anyone going to KFC specifically for avocado toast might have questionable priorities, but the price point and randomness of the item sparked a major online debate.

Customer reactions on social media were sharply divided. Some found the offering "so random," while others praised the value, calling $4.95 a "good price." Several suggested innovative twists, like adding a Zinger fillet to the toast, with one person pondering, "Does this mean we can add avocado to a Zinger burger now?"

Nostalgia and Past Breakfast Trials

The launch has stirred memories of KFC's previous forays into the breakfast arena. Many social media users recalled the chain testing morning menus decades ago. One person remembered a local trial 15-20 years ago, between 2005 and 2010, while others claimed KFC served breakfast back in the 1990s. Former employees also chimed in, with one ex-worker stating their store trialled breakfast about ten years ago, requiring staff to start at 5-6am.

This historical context suggests KFC has long eyed the breakfast daypart, with mixed success. The same ex-worker claimed the earlier trial didn't perform well because "people just wanted KFC meals for breakfast, not breakfast KFC."

A Game Changer or a Step Too Far?

Reception to the new menu has been largely enthusiastic, with many declaring it a "game changer" that could challenge McDonald's dominance. Comments like "Move over Maccas" and "This is peak breakfast" flooded social media. Travellers were particularly excited, with one looking forward to ordering a "Zinger brekkie at 6am at the airport."

However, not everyone was convinced by the need for a dedicated breakfast range. Some purists argued that the existing menu is perfect for any time of day, with one commenter stating, "Just give me a Zinger Box for breakfast, no need to ruin what's already perfect."

A KFC spokesperson, when approached, played coy about the trial's future. They acknowledged the unique timing of airport customers and hinted that more might be on the horizon, saying, "You might have to catch a flight to find out... you never quite know when a new finger lickin' menu item might drop." It remains unclear if the breakfast items will appear in other locations beyond Sydney Airport.
