Historic UK Town Devizes Set for £10m Tesco Superstore with 80 Jobs
Devizes £10m Tesco Superstore Plans Advance with 80 Jobs

Tesco has unveiled plans for a 40,000 sq ft supermarket in Devizes, Wiltshire, a historic market town, with the development expected to create between 75 and 80 jobs. The proposed store, part of a larger retail park including a drive-through Starbucks and a DIY store, would be built on land off Horton Road, approximately one and a half miles east of the town centre.

Public Consultation Underway

Before any construction begins, local residents are invited to review the plans and provide feedback during a public consultation running until July 21. The developer, Robert Cort Properties, plans to submit a planning application to Wiltshire Council in September. If approved, construction could start in 2027.

Managing director Jonathan Skull expressed optimism about the project: "I feel it could be a lovely plot that the community could benefit from." He also highlighted the employment opportunities: "A lot of young people, especially, are struggling to find jobs."

Store Features and Design

The Tesco store would include an in-store bakery, clothing department, health and beauty products, cash machines, Click and Collect services, and home delivery. Trading hours are expected to be from 7am to 11pm. Architect Robert O'Reilly emphasized the design's harmony with the surroundings, noting the site sits about 400 metres from the North Wessex Downs National Landscape boundary. "We want to integrate a strong parkland look, with lakes and trees. It won't be boring grey boxes in a boring grey landscape," he said.

Economic Impact and Traffic Concerns

Tesco's property acquisition team member Lee Nicoll stated that Devizes currently loses around £4 million annually to the Tesco store in Trowbridge. He believes a new supermarket would help retain more spending locally. "We're confident there's a place for us. We want to be in Devizes and believe the public will enjoy our products," he added.

Transport consultant Paul Greatwood said he does not expect significant traffic issues from the development. Instead, he noted it would allow residents on the eastern side of Devizes to shop without driving through the town centre.

Background and Next Steps

The site, known as Moonraker Business Park, was previously proposed for a business park that attracted little support. Reading-based developer Robert Cort Properties purchased the land and advanced the retail plans. Devizes, one of Wiltshire's oldest market towns, is renowned for its historic market square and the nearby Caen Hill Locks.

Residents can view the proposals and speak to the development team during the consultation period. If planning permission is granted, the new retail park could bring a significant boost to the local economy and provide modern shopping facilities.
