Expert-Tested: The Best Single Malt Scotch Whiskies to Buy This Year

Single malt Scotch whisky is one of the most rewarding spirits categories to explore, but it can also be intimidating. With classic age-statement bottles, experimental cask finishes, and characterful independent bottlings, there is no shortage of choice. However, not every bottle delivers. I have tested a broad selection across different regions, styles, and price points to find the best expressions worth buying now.

Glen Garioch's 12-year-old outperforms many more famous names. From one of Scotland's oldest distilleries in the eastern Highlands, it is bottled at 48 per cent ABV and matured in bourbon and sherry casks. The nose offers poached pear, malted barley, heather honey, and a soft floral note. The palate has a satisfying texture with crème brûlée, ripe banana, pear, light oak, and dried fruit, balanced by a faint earthy edge. This is a strong all-rounder.

Auchentoshan's American oak is a reminder that single malt need not be heavy or smoky. From the Lowland distillery known for triple distillation, it is matured in first-fill American oak bourbon casks, giving a light, clean profile. The nose is bright and creamy with vanilla, coconut, lemon, orange, peach, and grassy freshness. The palate adds citrus peel, light toffee, orchard fruit, and a crisp grapefruit finish. It feels more like an aperitif than an after-dinner dram.

Highland Park's 18-year-old is a benchmark premium island single malt. Made in Orkney, it combines sherry-seasoned cask richness with gentle heathery peat. Aromas of honey, dried fruit, soft toffee, and orange peel lead to a silky palate with stewed fruit, dark chocolate, toffee, heather honey, and slight peatiness. Notes of coffee and spice on the finish prevent the sweetness from feeling too soft. This is an exceptionally well-balanced whisky.

Laphroaig's 10-year-old is a defining Islay whisky, bold and medicinal. The nose is all sea spray, iodine, smoked fish, tar, damp peat, and orchard fruit. The palate offers more sweetness than expected, with vanilla, malt, apple, and lemon cutting through the smoke. At 40 per cent ABV, it can feel lighter than its reputation suggests, but the flavour identity is unmistakable. For a benchmark Islay malt, this is essential.

The Macallan 12-year-old double cask is the most accessible route into the distillery's house style. Matured in American and European oak sherry-seasoned casks, it is polished, sweet, and very easy to understand. The nose is soft with fudge, orange, and dried fruits, while the palate is smooth with toffee, vanilla, and gentle spice. It is a reliable choice for those seeking a luxurious, approachable single malt.
