Beak Fried Chicken, a popular independent fried chicken restaurant in Liverpool, served its last meals at its Smithdown Road location on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The closure has left regular customers devastated, with many expressing their sadness on social media.
Background and Ownership
Co-owned by Ben Raywood, Sam McKee, and Natalie Grady, Beak launched in January 2021. The trio began by selling 50 burgers every Friday from Sam McKee's mother's kitchen before expanding into one of the North West's most recognised independent food brands. The restaurant claimed to serve the best sliders 'outside of America'.
Reasons for Closure
Despite being shortlisted for Uber Eats Restaurant of the Year in the North West in 2025, the owners made the 'difficult decision' to close the Smithdown site. In a social media statement, they said: 'Unfortunately though times are hard and we have to bow out on this one.' The statement thanked customers and staff for their support and encouraged fans to continue visiting the Crosby branch.
Memorable Moments
Reflecting on their time at the venue, the owners shared memorable moments, including hosting weddings and baby showers, surviving a neighbouring weed farm fire, and even being targeted by fireworks. Most importantly, they built a loyal community of regular customers.
Customer Reactions
Customers quickly shared messages of support following the closure announcement. Comments included 'Absolutely gutted', 'Sad times', and 'Nooooooo, you will be missed', as diners expressed their disappointment at losing the Smithdown restaurant.
Future Operations
Beak will continue trading from its Crosby restaurant. Co-owner Ben Raywood previously said the business was founded by 'three friends from Crosby' who wanted to leave behind their corporate careers. He said the success of Beak had made the team 'so proud and massively appreciative.'
