Asda has completed a major rollout of new checkout technology across its UK stores, replacing legacy Walmart systems with its own purpose-built software. The supermarket chain has installed over 17,000 new checkout screens, 6,000 hardware units, and updated 30,000 scan-and-go devices as part of the 'Project Future' transformation.
The move, three years after the Issa brothers acquired Asda from Walmart, also involved retraining approximately 30,000 staff. Kevin Besford, Asda's senior director of retail transformation, said the new touchscreens and scanners would make shopping 'quicker and simpler' for customers and colleagues.
Asda partnered with checkout technology provider NCR on the upgrade. Besford noted that the transition from Walmart's 24-year-old systems gave Asda the chance to build its own front-end from scratch, unlocking potential for future innovation.
In January, reports indicated Asda was still paying Walmart for IT services, adding financial pressure amid billions of pounds in debt. The new systems are expected to reduce these costs over time.
