Pour Boiling Water in Wheelie Bin This Saturday, Urge Experts

Households across the UK are being urged to pour boiling water into their wheelie bins this coming Saturday to guard against an unsettling invasion inside dustbins. As hot weather returns, forecasted by the Met Office, bins become breeding grounds for maggots.

Why Maggots Thrive in Summer

Maggots, the larvae of flies, love hot conditions and enclosed spaces with plenty of food—conditions that bins provide. With temperatures set to rise to 30°C on Friday in parts of England, and persisting until Monday with highs of 33°C, the risk of infestation is high.

Expert Tips for Prevention

Mark Hall from BusinessWaste.co.uk shares advice: “Use hot water and a strong disinfectant or bleach solution (one part bleach to 10 parts water). Scrub the bin’s interior and lid thoroughly, focusing on corners and crevices. Rinse well and let the bin dry completely.”

If maggots are already present, pour boiling water over them to kill them instantly. Then dispose of the dead maggots and sanitise the bin.

Additional Measures

  • Compost food waste in a compost bin to reduce attraction.
  • Seal food bags tightly to prevent access.
  • Move the bin to a shaded area to keep it cooler.

Mark adds: “Maggots are quite prevalent in the summer due to the heat, but there are easy ways to prevent and remove them. Applying a couple of these tips should be enough to prevent these pests from becoming a problem.”
