Asda has announced plans to roll out electronic shelf edge labels (ESLs) across 250 of its largest and busiest Express convenience stores. The move, confirmed on October 3, aims to streamline operations and improve customer service.
The digital labels, supplied by VusionGroup and its partners Renovotec and HL Display, were trialled for three months at Asda's Oxford Road Store in Manchester. During the trial, colleagues were able to spend more time helping customers and managing deliveries, as manual label swapping was eliminated.
Each store will receive approximately 2,800 ESLs, which will display pricing, weight, unit price, and allergen information via QR codes. The technology allows for instant price updates, reducing the need for manual tag replacement.
Asda plans to open up to 20 new Express stores before the end of the year, all of which will feature ESLs from day one. Joseph Sutton, Vice President of Asda Express, foodservice and fuel, said: 'By streamlining our instore operations, we can free up our colleagues to focus on what they do best - serving our customers.'
Roy Horgan, CEO UK & Ireland of VusionGroup, added: 'By combining ESLs with IoT innovation and data-rich insight, we are helping to transform the in-store experience for Asda customers and colleagues.'
