Aldi has made award-winning wines available for under £5, proving that quality wine doesn't have to be expensive. The supermarket secured more than 50 medals at the prestigious International Wine Challenge (IWC) and International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC), with bottles starting from just £4.99.
International Recognition
Judged blind by wine experts, the awards recognize outstanding quality regardless of brand or price. Aldi's red and white ranges, as well as its prosecco and champagne, received accolades. The supermarket said the results demonstrate its commitment to offering high-quality wines from renowned regions at affordable prices.
Standout Winners
Among the winners are the Specially Selected Chilean Viognier (£4.99), Chilean Pinot Noir Reserva (£5.99), Chilean Merlot Reserva (£6.99), Stellenbosch Shiraz (£7.49), Picpoul de Pinet (£7.99), Chilean Sauvignon Blanc (£7.19), Castellore Organic Prosecco Rosé DOC (£7.99), Jolie by Juliette Coteaux de Béziers Rosé (£7.69), and Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (£15.99).
The Specially Selected Chilean Viognier (£4.99, 75cl) won a Bronze award, with IWSC judges praising its apricot and honeysuckle aromas, bright tangerine peel, and flavors of papaya and ginger, offering richness with a soft, lingering finish. The Specially Selected Chilean Merlot Reserva (£6.99, 75cl) won a Silver award, described as having vibrant raspberry, plum, and cassis with subtle oak, coffee, and tobacco leaf. The Castellore Organic Prosecco Rosé DOC (£7.99, 75cl) also won a Silver award, noted for its clean and fragrant profile with bright citrus and cranberry aroma and a savory finish.
The Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (£15.99, 75cl), described by Aldi as a long-standing favorite, impressed judges with its classic brioche, apple, and citrus notes.
Expert Opinion
Wine expert Sam Caporn said: "These competitions are judged completely blind, with wines assessed on quality alone rather than brand or price. That’s what makes Aldi’s results so impressive, with several being awarded Silver medals even when tasted alongside more expensive bottles. With award-winning bottles available from just £4.99, shoppers can enjoy wines recognized by leading judges without paying premium prices."
Commitment to Quality
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: "We’ve always believed that exceptional wine shouldn’t come with an exceptional price tag, and these results prove it. Our Buying Team works hard to source quality wines from the best regions in the world, and recognition from some of the industry’s most respected judges is a real testament to that effort. More than 50 awards across our wine ranges shows customers they can trust Aldi for outstanding quality and value, every time."
