Aldi Named Cheapest UK Supermarket for Groceries in January

Aldi has been named the cheapest supermarket in the UK for a grocery shop, according to new analysis by consumer group Which?. The discounter topped the list for a basket of 89 items, with an average price of £164.74 in January, closely followed by Lidl at £166.33 with a loyalty card and £166.53 without.

In the same comparison, Tesco with a Clubcard was the next cheapest at £182.92, while Waitrose was the most expensive at £221.53—34 per cent higher than Aldi. The analysis, based on a list of popular branded and own-label products, found that Aldi was the cheapest for 10 out of 12 months in 2025, making it the cheapest supermarket of the year.

However, for a larger shop of 228 items, Aldi and Lidl were excluded due to their smaller product ranges. In that category, Tesco with a Clubcard took the top spot with an average price of £588.96, knocking Asda into second place at £590.41. Asda had been the cheapest for the big shop every month in 2025.

An Asda spokesperson defended the supermarket's position, stating: “Asda was the lowest-priced supermarket every month in 2025 on the Which? big trolley comparison, and £50 cheaper in January on a like-for-like basket without loyalty pricing. Asda remains the best-value supermarket for the big family shop with prices available to all.”

Which? retail editor Reena Sewraz noted the ongoing price competition among discounters, saying: “While Aldi is the cheapest supermarket this month, the ongoing price competition among the discounters means Lidl also remains a strong money-saving choice for many shoppers.” She also urged Tesco to ensure loyalty discounts are accessible to all customers, including under-18s.
