More than a third of Britons (36%) are opting to stay home instead of going abroad this year due to the cost-of-living crisis, but many are spending up to £350 to recreate the 'holiday feeling' at home, a new study has found.
The research, commissioned by homeware retailer Homesense, polled 2,000 adults and found that over two-thirds (68%) believe it is possible to replicate the holiday experience while staying in the UK. One in four have already attempted to do so, and one in ten plan to give their home a makeover inspired by previous trips, spending an average of £349.
Popular methods include hanging fairy lights in the garden, replicating holiday meals, and hosting themed nights based on a country. The Mediterranean style is the most popular to recreate, followed by Scandinavian. Other steps include buying similar crockery, investing in outdoor furniture, and purchasing new bedsheets to mimic a hotel feel.
Deborah Dolce of Homesense said: 'The research confirms that customers are really looking for that new Med aesthetic. Think maximalist, White Lotus in Sicily vibe – and we’ve absolutely seen that in sales in our Homesense stores up and down the UK this spring.' Items flying off shelves include bright decorative items from Italy and Portugal, high thread-count bedding, bold rugs, terracotta platters, and quality Mediterranean ceramics.
Additional ways to bring the holiday feeling home include buying sunbeds, setting up a paddling pool, listening to music from specific countries, and making cocktails from around the world. Homesense is launching a golden ticket event this Saturday (June 10) at 9am, with prizes including five Mediterranean-inspired home makeovers with a top interior stylist and 500 £5 gift cards.
