Matou Asian Restaurant, situated above Liverpool's ferry terminal and renowned for its stunning views of the River Mersey, has been handed a zero-star food hygiene rating following an inspection on May 13. The Pan-Asian venue, which opened in 2010, describes itself as Liverpool's “most iconic” waterfront establishment.
Inspection Findings
Environmental health officers identified major concerns in several areas, including hygienic food handling, food safety management, and the cleanliness and condition of the premises. The report indicated that urgent improvement was required across these categories.
Restaurant's Response
A spokesperson for Matou expressed disappointment with the outcome, noting that the restaurant had previously maintained a five-star rating. They emphasized that most issues were administrative and structural, posing no direct risk to public health. The restaurant was not required to close, as no imminent health risks were identified.
Management stated they acted immediately to address all concerns. According to the restaurant, all necessary improvements and works have been completed, and an independent food and hygiene assessor verified the corrective actions.
Follow-Up Inspection
Matou has arranged for a follow-up inspection by Environmental Health, expected soon. The restaurant reiterated that customer and staff safety remains its top priority, and it is committed to upholding high standards.
Background
Liverpool Council's environmental health service conducts unannounced inspections to ensure food safety. Businesses with poor ratings are typically given time to improve unless there is an immediate risk. They may also request a re-inspection or appeal the rating.
