Rory McIlroy continued settling into his new Wentworth home before returning to the United States to compete in the US Open. The Northern Irishman and his family now call the prestigious estate home after relocating from Florida last year.
A New Chapter in Surrey
McIlroy has been getting comfortable in his Wentworth mansion with wife Erica Stoll and their daughter Poppy. He made a brief return to the property ahead of the US Open, having chosen to skip the Canadian Open. Speaking before he finished tied-12th at the Memorial Tournament, McIlroy admitted he had been prioritising quality family time before the major.
"Yeah, I feel a bit like a part-timer these days, but yeah, no, I had a couple weeks off. I had a couple of weeks off and we got ourselves settled into our house in London for the summer. It was nice to be there for the last 10 days," he said.
The £9 Million Purchase
The 37-year-old snapped up the property in 2023 for a staggering £9 million, and it was already among the most impressive homes in the area before the couple embarked on renovations. McIlroy has completely transformed the six-bedroom mansion following his relocation from their £16.5 million home in Jupiter, Florida.
These photographs were taken before the golfer commenced renovations while the home was still on the market within the prestigious estate. Nevertheless, they offer a remarkable glimpse of the lavish features that awaited the family.
Grand Entrance and Living Spaces
Upon stepping inside the property, visitors are greeted by a sweeping spiral staircase and a welcoming fireplace, complemented by traditional artwork and an assortment of rugs throughout. It is probable that McIlroy has refreshed this entrance hall with his own interior design touches, alongside Erica's discerning taste.
Moving through to the living room, the generous space features two sofa suites, a plush single armchair and yet another fireplace. The open-plan layout enables the new occupants to look across into the seating area from the kitchen. The living room is likely also being revamped by the couple, with some of McIlroy's numerous trophies set to grace the bookshelves alongside a top-of-the-range entertainment system being fitted.
Home Cinema and Modern Amenities
Impressively, the property also boasts a magnificent home cinema that can comfortably seat several guests for an evening screening. A vast television dominates one wall, while the remaining walls are painted a deep red, evoking the charm of classic picture houses. Sumptuous leather recliners are also featured in this room, along with a compact table in the centre for resting refreshments during a film.
This space will undoubtedly have been enhanced by the McIlroy family as they seek to modernise the entire property and further increase its value.
Reasons for Relocation
One of the driving factors behind their relocation was Erica's wish to spend more time in the UK. Speaking on Netflix's documentary Full Swing, the Northern Irishman revealed: "If it was up to her, she wouldn't move to England straightaway, but she definitely wants to spend more time there."
This decision may have been accelerated by Erica's aversion to the Florida sun and heat. PGA Tour star Martin Kaymer revealed that McIlroy's wife had told him: "I really don't like the sun [in Florida]." Kaymer had simply joked: "Your state's called the Sunshine State, right?"
Luxurious Bathrooms and Indoor Pool
Throughout the property, there are six bedrooms and an unspecified number of bathrooms. One of these is shown online, featuring an enormous bathtub and a wet-room shower. The bathroom boasts all-white fittings, including a wall-hung toilet and even a bidet. The space benefits from abundant bright light, courtesy of LED ceiling fixtures and natural daylight streaming through two windows beside the bath.
Another water-filled space is the impressive indoor swimming pool, equipped with a hot tub and floor-to-ceiling windows that encompass half of the room. The pool's illumination complements the water's shade, with deep blues establishing a tranquil environment where McIlroy will probably spend time recuperating from his professional commitments. This is amongst the most contemporary spaces in the entire property and is something that the golfer may elect to retain as it stands. Though he may enhance the area by incorporating a sauna or red-light therapy - both of which are popular recovery methods for athletes today.
Behind the Scenes of the Purchase
Prior to announcing his move to Surrey, fellow PGA Tour star J. J. Spaun let slip that McIlroy was planning to purchase the Wentworth mansion during a podcast appearance. Speaking on Fore Play, Spaun said: "He's super cool. We were talking about the UK. I know he's Northern Irish, but I asked him if he ever hangs out in London. I asked him about that, and he said, 'Oh yeah, I'm building a house out there'. He kept it really friendly and light, and then we chatted a lot until the back nine, and that was it!"
According to The Sun, McIlroy is believed to have spent as much as £14 million with the costs of renovations to extend and overhaul the property.
Exterior and US Open Preparations
The exterior of the home is every bit as striking as the interior, with magnificent trees, lush shrubbery and immaculate lawns flanking the driveway leading up to the residence. McIlroy has now set his sights on the US Open, which gets under way on Thursday at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in New York.
Reflecting on his preparations for the prestigious major, McIlroy said: "A little bit of practice, stopped off at Shinnecock on the way here on Monday, scouted it a little bit, and played. Excited for a nice, good tournament here, I missed this one last year, so it's good to be back. The course is as hard as ever, so looking forward to the challenge this week."
