The R&A has announced a record-breaking total purse of approximately £13.3 million for the 154th Open Championship, set to take place at Royal Birkdale in 2026. This marks a significant increase from the 2025 tournament prize fund.
Winner's Share and Runner-Up Payouts
The champion who lifts the Claret Jug will earn £2.4 million, the largest winner's payout in the tournament's history. The runner-up will receive around £1.37 million, while third place secures approximately £881,000. These figures represent a substantial step up from previous years.
Tax Implications
As the event is governed by the R&A and held on British soil, all player earnings are subject to UK tax regulations. Winners face a top-tier income tax rate of 45% on earnings exceeding £125,140, significantly reducing net income compared to lower-tax jurisdictions on professional golf tours.
Caddie and Staff Bonuses
Professional golfers typically allocate a large share of their winnings to their support team. A tournament-winning caddie earns a 10% cut of the prize money, equating to roughly £240,000 from the champion's share pre-tax. Coaches, physios, and other staff members also take percentages of the final payout.
Missed Cut Compensation
Even players who fail to qualify for the final two rounds receive monetary rewards. The top 10 players who miss the 36-hole cut will receive a payout of around £9,600. The next 20 players will earn £8,000 each, while the remaining players will get £6,800 each to help offset expenses.
