Trivallis, a housing association, has announced plans to demolish the former Merthyr General Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil and replace it with new housing. The building, a historic landmark, has been empty for years and is now structurally unsafe and vulnerable to crime and vandalism.
Acquisition and Safety Concerns
Trivallis has acquired the former hospital site and will submit a planning application to redevelop the area. The building's condition has deteriorated significantly, posing real safety concerns. Duncan Forbes, chief executive of Trivallis, stated: “We understand that Merthyr General Hospital is an important and much-loved part of the town’s history and we do not take the decision to seek its demolition lightly. However the building has been empty for many years and is now in a condition that presents real safety concerns and ongoing issues for the local community.”
Proposed Redevelopment
The demolition is deemed necessary to ensure public safety and enable the site to be brought back into positive use. Trivallis plans to deliver a high-quality development of new homes, addressing the growing demand for housing in Merthyr. Forbes added: “Our priority is to ensure the site is safe and to bring it back into use in a way that meets local needs. There is a clear and growing demand for good-quality new homes in Merthyr and we believe these proposals represent an important opportunity to deliver much-needed housing while improving the area.”
Community Engagement
If planning permission is granted, the redevelopment will create a “thoughtfully designed residential scheme that contributes positively to the local neighbourhood.” Trivallis is committed to engaging with residents, stakeholders, and heritage interests throughout the planning process, providing opportunities for the community to share their views on the proposals.
