Manchester United have secured the majority of the land needed for their planned new 100,000-capacity stadium, a major step forward for the project. The club reached an agreement with Indurent, a Blackstone portfolio company, to acquire a 25-acre triangular plot situated approximately 350 metres north-west of Old Trafford, between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way.
Land acquisition details
The club had been in negotiations with Freightliner to obtain land behind the Stretford End, but those talks stalled, prompting United to explore alternative options. The newly acquired site from Indurent gives United control of the majority of land required for the stadium. Securing the remaining plots is not expected to pose significant difficulties.
United confirmed they paid a fair price for the land, and design work on the stadium, which had been paused during the Freightliner negotiations, can now resume. Renowned architects Foster + Partner will lead the creative vision for the 100,000-seater venue.
CEO statement on progress
Collette Roche, CEO of United's new stadium development, said: "Today's news highlights the progress we're making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development. Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans."
Roche added: "We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not just for them, with atmosphere, affordability and accessibility at the heart of our thinking. This is a generational opportunity that is fully aligned with both local and national growth ambitions."
Next steps in redevelopment
Businesses affected by the proposals will be engaged directly by United to guide them through the transitional period. The Mayoral Development Corporation is set to unveil the broader masterplan for the Old Trafford regeneration project, along with details of the formal consultation period, on 9 July. The club has also confirmed that supporters will continue to be consulted throughout the stadium design phase.
