Gorseinon Workingmen's Club to Be Demolished for Housing After 100 Years
Gorseinon Workingmen's Club Faces Demolition for Housing

Plans have been submitted to Swansea Council to demolish the former Gorseinon Workingmen's Club, which served miners and tinplate workers for over a century. The building was bought at auction earlier this year and could be replaced with housing.

Sale and Demolition Plans

The club, located on Brighton Road, was put up for auction with a guide price of £100,000 and sold for £140,000, with the sale completing in February 2026. Applicant Victor Johnson has submitted a request to Swansea Council for prior approval to demolish the two-storey building, which extends considerably at the rear at single-storey level. The demolition would begin from the back, working towards the façade, where protective scaffolding would be erected.

History and Closure

Gorseinon Workingmen's Club, which once catered to miners and tinplate workers, featured three cellar rooms, a stage, and a snooker room. It closed as a social club in 2023 after 100 years of service. In its final weeks, the club hosted events including a Freddie Mercury tribute act with bingo during the interval, a Halloween event with cocktails, and Rugby World Cup matches.

An urgent members' meeting was called in December 2023, and the club posted a message on its Facebook page shortly after announcing it would cease trading. The post described the news as “heartbreaking” and stated: “Very sad times and our members and staff are obviously upset at this terrible time. We greatly appreciate all the customers that have supported us through our 100 years of service in Gorseinon and a heartfelt apology to the huge loss it will leave in our community. We will miss you all.”

Community Reaction

The closure prompted dozens of comments on social media. One woman wrote: “Very sorry to hear this. Our Asda nights out will not be the same without the Brighton Road. Thinking of you all x.” Another commented: “Worked there for a few years and had a ball.” A man posted: “We need find somewhere else for our pint.”
