Chelsea Urged to Sign Marcus Rashford as £40m Garnacho Replacement
Chelsea Urged to Sign Rashford to Replace Garnacho

Chelsea have been urged to sign England international Marcus Rashford as a replacement for outgoing winger Alejandro Garnacho, according to former Premier League midfielder Andy Townsend. Garnacho, 22, is on the verge of moving to Serie A side Roma after a disappointing debut season at Stamford Bridge, where he scored just one Premier League goal.

Garnacho's Struggles at Chelsea

Garnacho joined Chelsea from Manchester United for £40m in a deal initially hailed as a coup, given his status as an Argentina international and one of the most highly-rated young talents in English football. However, the winger failed to adapt, struggling for regular minutes in an underperforming Chelsea side. Both the player and the club believe a transfer is in everyone's best interest, with Roma expected to finalise the move in the coming days.

Rashford Emerges as Top Target

With Garnacho's departure imminent, Chelsea are likely to seek a replacement in the current transfer window. Townsend believes Marcus Rashford, 28, would be an ideal fit. Rashford is searching for a new club after Barcelona opted not to sign him permanently, instead spending £70m on his England teammate Anthony Gordon. Manchester United have no plans to reintegrate Rashford into Michael Carrick's first-team squad, and Chelsea have been tentatively linked with a move.

“I think Marcus Rashford improves Chelsea’s squad, he is an improvement on Alejandro Garnacho, that’s for sure,” Townsend told CasinoHawks. “The number we were talking about was £35m. I’m very surprised that no one has come to get him for that money, even if he’s 28.”

Wages and Fit at Chelsea

Townsend acknowledged that Rashford's high wages, reportedly around £300,000 per week, could be a stumbling block. However, he suggested that a compromise could be reached. “He’s on massive wages, which is an issue for any club, but you’d think he could get that to a level everyone finds acceptable. A club like Chelsea might suit him,” Townsend said. He added that Rashford's experience at Barcelona showed he can handle the pressure of a big club, and that at nearly 29, the forward is in his prime and needs regular playing time.

“At £35m, I’d be surprised if a deal doesn’t get done, depending on his salary demands. If he wants to stick on £300,000-a-week, then he’s going to have a problem,” Townsend warned. “But there’s no point in going back to Manchester United and not playing at his age. That doesn’t send a great image to potential suitors if he’s happy to just sit on the bench.”

Chelsea's New Era Under Alonso

The transfer speculation comes as Chelsea begin a new chapter under manager Xabi Alonso, who held his first press conference earlier this week after taking over at the start of July. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder will be tasked with revitalising a squad that underperformed last season. Replacing Garnacho with a proven Premier League talent like Rashford could be a key step in that process.
