Former Londoner Lists Seven Key Reasons She Prefers Northern Living
Ellisha Clapham spent almost ten years residing in London before making the decision to relocate back to Yorkshire to be closer to her family. The northerner, who founded E.S Collective, a PR and talent management business focusing on events, influencer marketing, and public relations, might have been expected to thrive in the capital. However, she has taken to social media to explain why her move northward has proven immensely beneficial.
Embracing a Different Pace and Priorities
In an Instagram post shared with her over 11,000 followers, Clapham addressed fellow northerners who felt returning home was a step backward. "I hear you," she wrote, "But moving back isn't a downgrade, it just looks different. Different pace, different priorities, different opportunities." She then outlined seven primary aspects of London life she does not miss, arguing that relocating north was her wisest decision.
The Seven Key Factors
- Cost of Existing: "ILY London, but the sheer cost of purely existing is a bit dramatic," Clapham stated. She noted that more than half her income vanished on basic living expenses, leaving little for leisure. In contrast, northern living allows disposable income to truly enjoy life.
- Living Situation: Dissatisfied with London housing, she described the choice between reasonable accommodations far from the centre or a "poorly decorated shoebox" shared with multiple flatmates. Northern cities, she asserted, offer affordable, nice apartments in central locations with amenities nearby.
- Sense of Community: Clapham highlighted the strong community feel in the north, something she found lacking in hectic London. "I didn't realise how much I missed chatting with strangers in the street," she said, adding she never knew her neighbours in the capital.
- Opportunities: Contrary to the common belief that London offers more career prospects, Clapham experienced the opposite. "In London, you're a small fish in a BIG pond," she explained, noting that northern circles are smaller and more accessible, creating more opportunities.
- Constant Rush: The perpetual hurry of Londoners, driven by competition and long commutes, negatively impacted her wellbeing. "My nervous system was effed up 24/7," she revealed, appreciating the more relaxed northern lifestyle.
- Travel Time: Despite London's extensive transport network, traversing the city can take hours, hindering personal connections. Clapham pointed out that visiting a friend on the other side of London might take as long as traveling from a northern city to central London, making distance less isolating.
- Northern Renaissance: She emphasized that the north is flourishing, with a booming economy, cool new brands, and events like the Brits. While grateful for her London experiences, she concluded, "I am so much more grounded being closer to family and have 10x better quality of life here."
Clapham's reflections challenge the allure of London, presenting a compelling case for the benefits of northern relocation based on cost, community, and quality of life.
