Record Prize Fund for the 154th Open
The R&A has announced a record-breaking total purse of £13.3 million for the 154th Open Championship, set to be held at Royal Birkdale from 16-19 July 2026. This marks an increase from the 2025 event, reflecting the tournament's growing financial stature.
Winner's Payout: £2.4 Million
The champion golfer who lifts the Claret Jug will receive £2.4 million, the largest individual payout in the tournament's history. This sum is part of the overall prize fund and represents a significant rise from previous years.
Runner-Up and Third-Place Earnings
The second-place finisher will take home approximately £1.37 million, while the third-place competitor earns roughly £881,000. These substantial sums highlight the financial rewards for top performers at the championship.
Tax Implications for Players
As the Open Championship is governed by the R&A and held on British soil, all prize money is subject to UK tax regulations. Winners face the top-tier income tax rate of 45% on earnings above £125,140, significantly reducing net income. This rate is higher than at some other golf tournaments held in lower-tax jurisdictions.
Caddie and Staff Bonuses
Top professionals typically allocate a portion of their winnings to their support team. A tournament-winning caddie generally receives a 10% share of the prize money, which would amount to approximately £240,000 from the champion's £2.4 million payout, pre-tax. Coaches, physios, and other staff also receive percentages of the earnings.
Compensation for Missed Cut
Players who do not make the 36-hole cut still receive financial compensation. The top 10 players among those who miss the cut will each receive around £9,600. The next 20 players will each get £8,000, and the remaining players will receive £6,800 each.
