Unidentified remains have been discovered in the search for a missing US soldier following Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan, the US military announced on Sunday. The attacks occurred on July 17, with two other service members already confirmed dead and one declared missing.
Remains Discovery and Verification
US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on July 19 that unidentified remains were found at the location after a thorough search. The statement read: "Yesterday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the passing of two U.S. service members and the missing status of one in Jordan following an Iranian attack on July 17. After a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today. An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing."
Additional Casualties in Iraq
CENTCOM also confirmed that a US service member was killed in northern Iraq on July 18 during "a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone." A second service member was wounded in the incident and is receiving medical treatment for minor injuries. CENTCOM stated: "CENTCOM is withholding additional information, including the identities of the missing and fallen warriors, out of respect for the families during the notification process."
Total Casualties and Evacuations
Previously, CENTCOM announced that four other American service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan. The two deaths announced on July 19 bring the total number of US personnel killed since the start of the war with Iran to at least 18.
