Last Minute Holiday Insurance Checklist: Avoid Costly Mistakes
Last Minute Holiday Insurance: Avoid Costly Mistakes

Before you zip up your suitcase and head to the airport this summer, travel insurance experts say there's one simple job you must do first: take a photo of everything inside your suitcase. It only takes seconds, but it could save hours of hassle and help recover hundreds or even thousands of pounds if your luggage is lost or stolen and you need to make a travel insurance claim.

Photo Your Belongings for Proof

Christian Bennett, at travel insurance provider Multitrip.com, said a few simple habits before you travel can make all the difference if something goes wrong. “Taking a photo takes seconds and provides a useful record if you later need to claim for lost or stolen belongings.”

Check Your Cover Levels

Next, check you've got the right cover. Make sure your cancellation limit covers the full cost of your holiday and your baggage limit reflects the value of everything you're taking. Cruises, winter sports and some other trips may need extra cover.

Declare Medical Conditions

Always declare any pre-existing medical conditions and tell your insurer if your health changes before you travel, including if you've seen a doctor, been to hospital, received a diagnosis or started new treatment or medication. Keep your policy number, insurer's contact details and emergency assistance number on your phone, and carry a paper copy as a back-up, Bennett said.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

If something goes wrong abroad, contact your insurer's emergency assistance line as soon as possible. Keep a record of what happened, including dates, times and locations, and hold on to receipts, medical reports and other paperwork. Report theft or lost belongings to the police within 24 hours where possible, as most insurers will ask for a crime report.

Christian said: “If your flight is cancelled, contact the airline first, as it is usually responsible for refunds, alternative travel and, in some cases, meals or accommodation.”

Don't Delay Your Claim

When you get home, don't delay making a claim. Check your policy's time limits, send all the documents requested and make sure nothing is missing, as incomplete paperwork is one of the biggest causes of delays.
