Martin Lewis has shared a simple energy tip that could save households up to £100 on their heating bills. The MoneySavingExpert founder urged people to check the 'flow temperature' of their boiler, which is the temperature the boiler heats water to before sending it to radiators.
Speaking on his ITV show, Lewis explained that boilers should be set to around 60°C, but many are programmed higher, which is inefficient. 'You can turn this down, it won't affect the heat in your house,' he said. 'It might take slightly longer to get up to the maximum temperature, but it can cut £100 a year off your bill.'
Lewis described the adjustment as a 'no-brainer' for combi boiler owners. Co-presenter Angellica Bell shared a success story of a viewer who reduced his boiler flow temperature from 85°C to 60°C, saving money without compromising performance. For guidance, Lewis recommended the free website MoneySavingBoilerChallenge.com.
Other tips included checking fridge and freezer temperatures—5°C for fridges and -18°C for freezers—and closing curtains at dusk to retain heat. Lewis also suggested turning down the thermostat by one degree, noting that 18°C is adequate for healthy adults according to the World Health Organisation.
