Free Electric Blankets for Vulnerable Households: OVO and Octopus Energy Launch Winter Support Scheme
Free Electric Blankets for Vulnerable Energy Customers

As winter tightens its grip and energy bills remain stubbornly high, two of Britain's largest energy suppliers are rolling out an innovative warmth initiative. OVO Energy and Octopus Energy are providing free electric blankets to their most vulnerable customers, offering a targeted solution to heating affordability.

How the Electric Blanket Scheme Works

The programme specifically targets customers who are either on the Priority Services Register (PSR) or have been identified as potentially struggling with their energy costs. Rather than heating entire rooms, the blankets provide efficient, personal warmth at a fraction of the cost of central heating.

OVO has confirmed they're contacting eligible customers directly with offers of free electric blankets. Similarly, Octopus Energy is running a parallel initiative, recognising that targeted support can make a significant difference during the coldest months.

Why Electric Blankets?

An electric blanket represents one of the most energy-efficient ways to stay warm. Compared to heating an entire living room or bedroom, running a blanket costs mere pence per hour. For elderly customers, those with health conditions, or households facing financial hardship, this can mean the difference between staying comfortably warm and facing dangerous cold.

"We know some customers are still struggling with the cost of living," explained an OVO spokesperson. "This is about providing practical help that directly reduces heating costs while keeping people safe and warm."

Eligibility and Application Process

Currently, both energy companies are proactively reaching out to customers they've identified as needing support. Those on the Priority Services Register – which includes elderly, disabled, or medically vulnerable customers – are being prioritised.

If you're an OVO or Octopus customer and believe you might qualify but haven't been contacted, it's worth checking your account online or calling their customer service teams to discuss available support options.

A Growing Trend in Energy Support

This initiative reflects a broader shift in how energy companies are addressing fuel poverty. Rather than just offering payment plans or debt forgiveness, they're exploring practical measures that directly reduce energy consumption while maintaining comfort and safety.

As temperatures continue to drop across the UK, such targeted support could prove crucial in helping vulnerable households navigate another challenging winter without having to choose between heating and other essentials.
