Ocado, the prominent retail technology firm, is implementing a significant workforce reduction, with approximately 1,000 positions being eliminated as part of a comprehensive cost-cutting initiative. This move aims to achieve savings of around £150 million through a broader organisational restructure.
Global Workforce Impact and UK Focus
The company has confirmed that the job cuts represent about 5% of its global workforce. Notably, roughly two-thirds of these redundancies will directly affect its operations within the United Kingdom. The majority of the UK-based reductions are expected to impact staff located at the firm's corporate headquarters in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
Strategic Restructuring and Division Mergers
As part of this overhaul, Ocado plans to streamline its research and development (R&D) activities, which is projected to reduce technology and support costs by approximately £150 million in the 2026 financial year. Furthermore, the business will restructure its commercial, support, and R&D operations. A key element of this restructure involves the merger of its Ocado Solutions and Ocado Intelligent Automation divisions into a single, consolidated unit.
Leadership Statement on the Changes
Tim Steiner, the Chief Executive of Ocado, addressed the difficult decisions, stating, "Regrettably, this means a significant number of roles will no longer be required." He expressed gratitude towards the affected employees, acknowledging, "We are grateful to colleagues who are affected by these changes, and whose talent and hard work have made a lasting contribution to Ocado." Steiner also emphasised the company's commitment to supporting impacted staff throughout the transition process.
