Manchester United have become more proactive in signing top young talent, with recent deals for Ayden Heaven and Tynan Thompson highlighting their strategy. The £1.5million signing of Heaven from Arsenal in January 2025 has proven successful, as the now-19-year-old has made 24 appearances for the first team after being promised a clear pathway.
Heaven's success as a selling point
Heaven, who played just 10 minutes for Arsenal in an EFL Cup tie, has since become a regular option at United. Despite fewer minutes after Michael Carrick took over in January due to early cup exits, Heaven's career has progressed to the point he trained with the England senior team in March. United can now point to his success when pitching to other young players.
Thompson's arrival from Tottenham
This summer, United signed 18-year-old Tynan Thompson from Tottenham for an initial £4million, with £4million in add-ons. Thompson has yet to train with his new side but is expected to feature in first-team training and friendlies against Atletico Madrid and Paris St-Germain in Sweden. If he impresses, he will remain around the first-team squad, similar to Shea Lacey.
With £100million transfer fees becoming the norm, United are seeking an edge by securing the best young players early, using the success of Heaven as a key selling point.
