Potatoes can last for five months or longer without sprouting or wrinkling if stored in the refrigerator, according to advice shared on the Homemaking Tips Facebook page and backed by food hygiene experts. The key is keeping them at a temperature below five degrees Celsius.
Fridge Storage Extends Potato Life Significantly
Many home cooks have discovered that refrigeration dramatically extends potato shelf life. Facebook user Carmen Leyva reported, "I always keep mine in the refrigerator. They lasted five months last time." Others like Kater Gonzales found that cupboard storage led to premature sprouting, while refrigeration solved the problem.
The UK's leading potato supplier Albert Bartlett now recommends fridge storage for all potatoes. They stated, "We previously suggested that you keep most potatoes in a cool, dry and dark place, but storing them in the fridge can make them last up to three weeks longer." This marks a shift from traditional advice.
Expert Guidance on Safe Potato Storage
Food hygiene specialists from Love Food Hate Waste confirm that potatoes "should be kept in the fridge at below five degrees Celsius." They added, "Doing so keeps them fresh for three times as long, so you'll have lots more time to cook up something delicious with them."
This advice contrasts with older recommendations to store potatoes in a cool, dark cupboard. However, experts now agree that refrigeration is the most effective method for long-term preservation.
When Potatoes Are Still Safe to Eat
Potatoes that have sprouted are generally safe to eat once the sprouts are removed before cooking. It is also important to check for mould or green patches, which indicate spoilage. Any potato that feels mushy, has started to wrinkle, or emits a foul smell should be discarded immediately. Potatoes leaking moisture should also be thrown away.
Fresh potatoes should feel firm and have an earthy scent. Dark spots or green areas can be cut out before consumption. Proper storage in the fridge at the correct temperature can prevent these issues and keep potatoes usable for months.
